Vivian Mayers, violin

Vivian Mayers is a violinist and educator based in New York City. She specializes in the performance of early music, and particularly enjoys opportunities to engage deeply with the historical and cultural context of the music she performs. Her playing takes to heart the idea that music is a type of language, and must be communicated with intention and careful attention to detail.

Ms. Mayers is currently working toward a Master’s degree in Historical Performance from The Juilliard School. She has performed in venues across the American Northeast, and has recently appeared with The Sebastians, the Valley of the Moon Music Festival, the Elm City Consort, the Yale Baroque Opera Project, and Juilliard415. She is a founding member of The Arrow Quartet, an ensemble focused on creating meaningful and inclusive chamber music experiences with an eye toward historically informed performance.

In conjunction with her work as a performer, Ms. Mayers is a dedicated teacher and works with violin students of all ages (her current students range from 3 to 60 years old). She has recently begun to connect her parallel interests in historical performance and music pedagogy by compiling a method book to teach beginning music students to play the baroque violin. She hopes to expand the opportunities currently available to pre-college students in historical performance, so that this greatly enriching approach to music might be accessible from an early age. Ms. Mayers also works as an academic tutor, providing individual English and writing instruction to students grades K-12. Starting in Fall 2023, she will begin work as a general education teacher at Classical Charter Schools in the South Bronx. She graduated cum laude from Yale University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in History.
